Quick Tips for Blogging Beginners

I get asked often by people who say, “tell me one thing that will help me get started with blogging.”

As much as I love teaching and educating people about blogs, that is an impossible question to answer with just “one thing.”

It’s like someone asking “tell me one thing that will help me lose a 100 pounds.” It can’t be done in one sentence.

There’s not just one thing, there’s a bazillion.

So instead, I will share a mittful of ideas and thoughts to help to get you on your way to Blogdom. Blog Supremeness. Bloggy Bliss.

FOCUS. In my opinion, focus is the key to success. It’s right up there with good content. You need to figure out what your blog is about. Too many Bloggers write about way too many topics (imo). Although the “jack of all trades” writing may work in the very beginning, you will need to fine tune your posts later on down the road. Laser in on the thing that makes your heart sing, or the thing that reels in the most interested readers.

Franticmommy’s goal/focus has always been to make people laugh. If readers read my goofy (and true) stories on the trials and tribulations of parenthood and think “thank gawd it’s not just me!”….MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

However, there are times (like today) when I just want to share something that I think would appeal to, and be helpful to my readers.  Just keep things relevant to your blog..and know that your focus is. Are you a Foodie? Health and Wellness guru? Thrifty Living?

Pick one, and rock it!

TITLES AND KEYWORDS: People are crushed daily with an influx of info. With that in mind, readers are more likely to click on fun and intriguing titles. Not only do your titles need to match what you are writing about, they need to be catchy and fun. The title “Dear Beastwomen I Just Saw At Walmart” may not have the keyword “umph” …BUT wouldn’t you want to click on it and read more?

Readers-vs-Visitors: So, which do you want? This is a complicated one to explain, but it will determine the voice of your blog. “Visitors” could be the types of people who pop by your blog just long enough to enter your giveaway, add themselves as a follower (because it’s part of the instructions of the contest), drive up your traffic numbers and page views (which makes your blog more valuable in the eyes advertisers), but disappear quickly and possibly never visit your blog again. “Readers”, on the other hand, are people committed to your blog and stop by because they like what you have to say. No carrots need to be dangled..they just like what you have to say. Figure out which is important to you, and conduct yourself accordingly.

Gadgets: There are some kick-butt Gadgets out there for your blog. Many right withing Blogger. Here’s a couple I advise to include on your blog:

LinkWithin: An app that shows thumbnails of related stories at the end of your post. A great way to get people to “click around” your blog.

Share Buttons: Make it easy for your peeps to Share your awesomeness to Twitter and Facebook. This Gadget is right within Blogger’s tools. Here’s an easy peasy tutorial: http://www.bloggerplugins.org/2010/06/official-sharing-buttons-on-blogger.html

Subscribe Box: Life moves fast and for people on-the-run like myself it’s nice to get that email reminder that says “hey! cool new post at Franticmommy’s!” This Gadget is also right within Blogger and is a very smart move to add.

How about you? What are some of your favorite apps. Gadgets or “bling” on Blogger??

  1. I’m a long time blogger. I actually have 2 thriving and successful blogs. One is for reviews and the other is more of a personal journey blog. Both have been profitable in their own way, both emotionally and financially.

I just started writing on another blog. This one is anonymous. I just want the privacy to tell my story like it is. But, focus, I must. That’s a great tip for sure!
