People look at me funny when I tell them Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of all times. I get the feeling they secretly think we are sacrificing chickens in the backyard or brewing up potions when I mention that our whole family has more anticipation for Halloween than Christmas.
We are just weird like that 🙂
One thing we’ve done for the last few years that I would highly recommend that everyone consider is offering Book or Treat in your neighborhood or community. Book or Treat is a fun and creative way to get books into the hands of young readers along with their treats.
Book-or-Treat in Three Easy Steps:
- Book-or-Treat is a time to clean out your bookshelves.
- Place all the children’s books you don’t want into a box or basket.
- When Halloween night arrives, let the trick-or-treaters pick out a book and some candy.
Yes, it’s really that simple! I have to say it’s such a hoot to see all the kids lingering in our yard reading their books and the parents seem to love it too.

There are other ideas and ways your household, business or community to participate and create your own Book or Treat and my friend Valarie has created a really cool free report that shares some of these ideas.
