“My name is Sahar Reiazi and I am the author and illustrator of Hearing is BEAUTIFUL. This diverse picture book is about a little boy who has hearing loss and wonders why he is different. A story about diversity and self-acceptance.”
Sometimes I just can’t believe how lucky I am to be able to connect (and get to know!) amazing moms from all over the world. Sahar is a perfect example.
Sahar and I crossed paths last year when she became one of the Global CoHosts of Multicultural Children’s Book Day. She lives in Iran and is the mother of a 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old boy/girl twins. Her son’s hearing loss inspired her to write and illustrate a children’s picture book about a little boy who has cochlear implants “My Cochlear Implants.” This debut book has since been translated into several languages and I love how passionate she is about the subject of hearing loss.
I also always appreciate when a diverse children ‘s book comes across my radar shares a not-so-common (but much-needed- topic. Sahar’s first book, and now her second, do exactly that.
Hearing is BEAUTIFUL: a diverse picture book about hearing loss
For ages 3-8, Hearing is BEAUTIFUL is about a little boy who wears cochlear implants to be able to hear. But, he wonders why he is different. Join him on his journey of discovering why everybody is different in their own way.
My Take-Away: This book is beautiful, vibrant, and not only touches on the journey of a child/parent bond but also a powerful lesson that if we just look around, everyone is beautiful in their own way. Loved this book!
Sahar is the mother of a hearing-impaired child so she knows first-hand how important it is to represent children with hearing loss to be represented and encourage conversations on the topic. She publishes a set of free flashcards every day on her Instagram page @mycochlearimplants and they are uploaded as one file on her website on a weekly basis. Discover her work HERE.

Eight years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.
